Shostakovich Symphony 10
One of my favorites of all time.

Dmitri Shostakovich- Symphonies No. 2 & 10
Bernard Hatink and the London Philharmonic

Review of  Artists-
I always find it hard to choose between conductors and orchestras on purely orchestral pieces, and alhtough I often favore Rostrapovich's conducting when it comes to Shostakovich, I had to go with Hatink on this one. I say this merely because of how he does the second movement of Symphony 10. It needs to be fast, rigerous, and hard hitting, and his performance is best of all of the others I have heard.
Review of Pieces
Although I'm not a fan of his second symphony, Shostakovich's 10th is nothing less than Epic. It is filled with his signature DSCH motiff, and there is nothing else like it. The second movement is my favorite orchestral movement of all time. The first movement sets up about 20 minutes of tension, which is all released in the 4 minutes of the second movement. It is so complex, difficult, and just absolutely incredible. There has never been a time where I have not gotten shivers when listening to this. It has an incredible effect on me, and I can't quite describe it. I get both anixous, becuase of the raging emotion, but also extremely excited because it;s, well, exciting, and also just makes me think "damn, classical music totally kicks ass".
